Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 18, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how SafeSail, operated by Aristarch Software, collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use the SafeSail Android app (com.safesailapp.android), our regatta services, or visit safesailapp.com.
1. Who we are
Website: https://safesailapp.com
Operator: Aristarch Software
Contact email: contact@safesailapp.com
2. What data we collect
When you submit an updates/notification request, we may collect:
- Email address
- Name (optional)
- Requested quantity / seats (optional)
- IP address
- User agent (browser and device information)
If you submit a quick rating (1–5 stars), we may collect limited technical data needed to prevent abuse (such as IP address and a daily vote token).
If you request contact details, we may store a hashed IP address and optional phone number you provide, for spam prevention and follow-up.
3. Why we process data
- To send product updates you requested
- To understand website feedback (aggregate ratings)
- To prevent abuse and ensure website security (anti-spam, rate limiting)
- To operate club accounts, regatta applications, and related services
4. Location data
SafeSail accesses your precise or approximate device location, with your Android permission, for the map, anchor watch, journey recording, weather and emergency coordinates. You can revoke location permission in Android settings. Features that depend on location may then be unavailable.
Community AIS: when you enable sharing, the app sends your coordinates, your app-generated device identifier and vessel name to SafeSail. Shared positions and vessel details can be viewed by other users through our community map and related services. Community AIS is app-based sharing, not a marine AIS transponder. Disable sharing to stop sending new Community AIS positions.
Background location for regattas: while you are entered in a regatta, SafeSail collects your location, speed and course even when the app is not open or the screen is off, and sends them with your device identifier and race entry to the SafeSail race server. This supports the live race map, standings and recorded race replay, which can be viewed by organisers and viewers of the regatta pages. The app displays a disclosure before requesting permission and an ongoing tracking notification. Leave the race in the app to stop tracking and sending new race positions.
Local journey recordings and settings are stored on your device. If you choose to export a track or share emergency coordinates, the data is provided to the app or recipient you select. Your emergency phone setting is used to open the phone dialler; SafeSail does not need access to your contacts or call history.
5. Legal bases
- Consent for update notifications and optional contact follow-up
- Legitimate interest in operating and securing the website, preventing abuse, and improving the service
- Contract / legitimate interest for club accounts and regatta organisation features
6. Retention
We keep notification emails and related records only as long as needed for the purpose collected, or until you ask us to delete them where applicable.
Community AIS keeps the latest position for each device; positions older than two minutes are excluded from nearby results and removed during subsequent API cleanup requests. Live regatta positions are cleaned up after six hours during subsequent race updates. Recorded regatta track points and race entries are stored separately for race history and replay and are not covered by that six-hour cleanup. To request removal of a race recording, entry or community contribution, contact contact@safesailapp.com with the race code and your vessel name or app device identifier so we can locate the relevant records. Disabling sharing stops new uploads; it does not delete existing race recordings.
Local tracks can be deleted in the app; clearing Android app storage removes local app data. This does not remove data already submitted to our servers or copies you exported. Server security logs and backups may retain technical records until their normal rotation or where retention is required by law.
7. Your rights
Under GDPR you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or objection regarding your personal data, and you may withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. Contact us at contact@safesailapp.com.
8. Contact
For privacy questions: contact@safesailapp.com.
9. Other mobile app data and service providers
When you submit a community hazard, buoy, depth or correction report, SafeSail receives the marker coordinates, your device identifier, vessel name and any title, note or depth you provide. Marker details are made available on the community map. Only submit information you intend other users to see.
The app requests map tiles from Esri and OpenSeaMap and weather and marine forecasts from Open-Meteo. These providers receive your IP address and request details; forecast requests include coordinates and map tile requests identify the area being viewed. Their own privacy policies apply to their processing. Android location services may also process data under your device and Google settings. Our hosting providers process server data to operate SafeSail.
10. Data protection and choices
Mobile app requests to the SafeSail servers use HTTPS. Access to device location is controlled by Android permissions, and regatta tracking also requires the in-app join action. We do not sell location data or use it for advertising. Shared maps and race pages expose the information described above to their viewers; do not enable sharing if you do not want that visibility.
To ask for access or deletion of server-held app data, email contact@safesailapp.com. We may ask for information needed to verify the request. You may also contact your data protection authority. Updates to this policy will be published on this page with a revised update date.
